an eye on it, it is falling a little bit. 1.95% after a soft set of uk retail sales figures. spain, italy, moving higher, but not too much of a move there. 5.3%. and 4.4 for italy. now, forex rates, the euro/dollar and the yen has been in focus still in the last several trading sessions and that continues today. 1.3230 is the level. the yen, though, is giving back about .5% after the bank of japan's quantitative easing plans, pretty much flecting a buy the rumor, sell the fact move. now, house republicans plan to bring their tax bill to a floor vote today. this as tensions over the white house over the fiscal cliff have started to rise. it's unclear what the bill, known as plan b, will look like. house speaker john boehner has reportedly added spending cuts to convince members it will be worth the vote. president obama has threatened to veto the bill. the president says he's puzzled by what's holding up budget talkes and that house republicans should stop trying to score a point against him. >> take the deal. you know, they will be able to claim that they have worked with me over the last

closing at 12:30. the nordic markets all closed for trades today. italy closed for trade. the smi closed for trade. we've got the ftse 1100 a couple of points higher. the cac and the ibex 35 just off marginal marginally, as well. i would like to show you what type of performance we've had on a year-to-date basis. rising somewhere in the region of 15% since the beginning of this year. you will note that we have had had a bit of a rally heading towards december. the question is whether we'll see that continue into next year. looking at a slightly broader base, the 600 index here, year-to-date higher by 15%, as well. europe's largest economy, the german market seeing some pretty significant gains as well as the dow jones stocks 50 up by 50%. so this brings its up, can it really continue next year? that's when you want to glance at barons, indicating over the weekend you could be looking at a rally. 20% next year. they singled out a number of stocks that they mentioned next year. by the way, andrew one look like one of the little elves in denmark dressed in my parents' garden. it's very swee

because spending cuts are not working out for italy's government. prime minister mario monti announced he would resign after losing support over his austerity moves. a return of political instability there reminds us that europe still faces a lot of hurdles before it comes out of its economic crisis. countries like greece, spain and italy have been tackling their problems with sharp cuts in spending and higher taxes and that's been fueling recession and unrest. meanwhile, we now know that japan officially slipped into its own recession over the summer with the japanese economy contracting 3.5% between july and september. now, the previous quarter, the previous three months number was also revised lower and that makes for two consecutive quarters of negative growth and that's the classic definition of a recession. from asia, back to america, literally, a group of chinese investors agreed today to buy an 80% stake in aig's aircraft leasing business. back in 2008, the insurance giant was bailed out by the u.s. government to the tune of $180 billion. four years on, still paying back the money

ready with unlimited support for spain and italy, when and if they sign on to oversight agreements. these are huge dramatic changes. think about how many times we've agonized over where the money would come from for bailing out spain and italy. now we know. when they sign on to oversight. >> the point is we know -- we know what the policy response already is by the ecb and the feds. so what is going to be the next catalyst to keep the markets to those new highs you're talking about? >> the next big catalyst is obviously the fiscal cliff resolution, second, you have spain sign on to oversight from the ecb. remove any possibility of spanish default and we think that lagarde is signaling that the conditions to that oversight will be a lot about labor market reforms. those are growth enhancing, so that's another great catalyst for the market. last, but certainly not least, i think you could see the new leadership team in china come more aggressive reform program than people are expecting. >> all right. michael, good to have you. >> thank you so much. >> michael jones of riverfront. >>

country fully fully, over in italy, and losing an arm, such a hero, storming several german machine gunner nests, and so brave because he was an american, he was fighting for his country. some may have mentioned or some might in the future mention danny's statement to many of us that went to a prayer breakfast a few months ago. dan didn't ever go to any prayer breakfasts. but he went to one and he wanted to explain why he did something. and it was one of the more touching moments in my memory here is when danny went through a bit of his life, explaining how he was in hawaii, in a foster home, orphanage, something similar to that and a bishop would come by monthly with each of the young children and say what can i do for you, young lady, young man and deap right away said i want a home. he explained how he went to live in the bishop's home raised by nuns and that went a long way to help danny appreciate and understand decency, working together in community, and it metropolitan a lot to him. and later then pearl harbor and he wanted to sign up and serve. but when he explained all this to us,

military. that says it all. after being gravely wounded in italy, senator inouye's arm was amputated. he spent 21 months recuperating from his wounds in an army hospital in michigan. there he met a lifetime friend, future majority leader bob dole, another young g.i. who had been also wounded in the european theater. senator dole told senator inouye he planned to go to law school and eventually serve in congress. dan inouye was elected to congress in 1959 as hawaii's first congressman. bob dole was elected to congress a year later. senator inouye always joked, i went with the dole plan and i beat him. three years later, dan inouye was elected to the senate and he's been a soft and powerful voice for the people of hawaii ever since. although senator inouye was an unabashed progressive democrat, he always put his country first and his party second. dan was a vibrant and vital presence in the senate and in death he'll remain a legend. his last words on earth, aloha. and it is with a heavy heart that i and we bid aloha, goodbye, i love you to a friend and legend of the senate, daniel ken inou

as you have a drag on the economy. you have negative growth, a recession in spain and italy this year. you also have negative growth in greece. there's only so much you can have of negative growth across the continent of europe before impact spending patterns across the world. there are positives out there but we have to be focused on the fact that these problems are not going to go away. one of every four people in spain are unemployed and under the age of 25. fifty-six% to not have a job. that is a major rest of the for disaster and the math does not work. if you try to fix a problem with negative growth and nobody working. dennis: a lesson here. one last note on the fed. what is your concern there? >> pretty simple. the fed has raised the credit market. yield and price are not real. they are buying up trillions of dollars of these bonds and i'm worried about the day when the market no longer listens to them. the market has not been bigger than the fed over the last few years. of the market gets bigger than the fed, look out. yields should be much higher than where they are and if w

. japan is technically in a recession. you have more uncertainty in italy. one of the important countries. and also you have this concern happening in japan. we have this week, ben bernanke and the fed will meet at a two-day fed meeting. a lot of people are hoping to hear from the federal reserve chief that there will be some kind of on going stimulus in the form of, you know, bond buybacks or something. we'll be looking to see what he has to say about the economy. this is another big uncertainty in the markets for the week. you know, this comes after consumer spending showing as "the wall street journal" set this morning, consumer spending, consumer confidence wabbling. this is europe concerns. we're seeing that consumer heading into the end of the year is starting to get a little more nervous about where we're headed here. now fiscal cliffs and payroll, fiscal cliff has a lot to do with this. the american payroll association this is the trade group for all of the small business who's are doing payrolls, you know, paying you. they say the fiscal cliff really isn't january 1st. their fisc
